Flowers as Accessories

Flower designing goes beyond a vase; it’s one thing that connects nature with beautiful femininity. Florists have been creating accessories in the way of corsages, boutonnieres, and flower crowns for quite some time, but new designs have stolen the spotlight. From purses to scarves, and headpieces to suit accessories, we’ve compiled a list of the latest items in flower styling.

Wedding “Bouquets”

Avant-garde, linear, constructive, and playful, the latest designs of hands-free bouquets have sparked a new niche of creativity. The style to the left, the designer has created a small optical illusion by incorporating wire and naturally long stems to showcase a dance-like flow to the bouquet. The next arrangement has incorporated cala lilies as a base for the structure to complement their flexibility. The arrangement appears circular and spiral-like, though stable enough to hold. Another style includes stringing flowers together at the base of their petals, making one long row of flowers to drape over an arm or to wear around the neck. Lastly, much like a purse hanging from a woman’s forearm, the gold flower accessory keeps the stems in one secure place, allowing the bride or bridesmaids a much wider range of motion. Each style is unique from each other and the traditional style of bridal bouquets entirely.

Handheld Accessories

While they may not be used to carry a compact mirror or lipstick, these floral hand accessories are nothing less than a work of art. Delicately wrapped, cut, and configured to form a stable handle and body of a purse, each of these flowers must rely on the strength of their stems. This style of design requires great skill and understanding. While the style to the left displays a garden style collection of blooms, the other two purses are  monochromatic, displaying only one kind of flower. These accessories are perfect for any spring wedding, gala, holiday event, or special occasion. The last accessory is a pomander ball, which is a small, circular arrangement carried by a ribbon. Popular in 90s weddings, the pomander ball is a beautiful addition for a flower girl, or anyone attending a black tie affair.

Hair Pieces

For centuries little kids have been making crowns out of flowers from the field or lacing them in their braids. While for some it may have never stopped being a sweet summer tradition, for most it has fizzled out as a regular fashion accessory. Though, that has begun to change for floral designers partnering with fashion shows, weddings, and photoshoots. Showcased in New York Fashion week with the American Clothing Label Rodarte for SS19, as well as Alice + Olivia’s SS24. To incorporate unconventional florals in a wedding, consider a flower hairpiece as a replacement for a veil, or to pair with a reception outfit change. Whether attached by comb or headpiece, a floral decoration is a beautiful addition to wedding attire. For special occasions or a gala, delicately incorporate a few stems into an elaborate hairstyle to pair with a lovely outfit. Whether it’s for an event or just a sunny day, a floral decoration enhances the beauty of the wearer.

Wearable Art Pieces

For the more eccentric individuals, a boa or piece of jewelry is a lively way to incorporate flowers as wearable art. This flower boa of simple white flowers adds a touch of class and intrigue. Whether for a black tie event, wedding, elegant gala, or ball, accessorize with something that stands out. The chest piece is a lovely option for a simple dress or outfit to become eye-catching. Alternatively, the understated orchid necklace displays a simple yet chic decoration that brings out the whimsy of each day. Pair it with a day-to-day look or something elegant. Lastly a modern take on the classic corsage is a beautiful addition to the wedding party, prom or high school events, as well as life’s celebrations.

Suit Decorations

Boutonnieres decorating the lapel of a suit is a traditional wedding accessory for members of the wedding party. The boutonniere can be pinned directly on the suit jacket, or the florist may design a clear protector that slides easily into the jacket pocket in place of a pocket square. More elaborate floral decorations include a flat lay, shown below. These are made using much larger flower heads and more lush greenery and can extend as far as the wearer would like. An exciting alternative is the flower-decorated tie. Decorating a suit is an incredible way to incorporate the wedding flowers and colors, while matching the bouquet or decorations. However it is worn, including flowers on a suit jacket is a sophisticated, beautiful, and classy touch.

Veils and Hats

Imagine walking down the aisle with the lively yet gentle smell of peony and sweet pea radiating from your veil. Including just a few simple blooms on a veil can add a delicate detail to an already stunning look. Lace them into the top of your veil close to your hair. As for hats, designers have been going after a natural look rather than polished. It is almost supposed to look like you’ve just walked through a field and collected the prettiest flowers. While these are for more niche events such as a spring or summer wedding, or a summertime event, they are sure to stun in the right context and season! These are perfect accessories to order any time of the year.

Flowers are not only meant to be contained in a vase; let their beauty match that of the wearer’s artful clothing choices and stylings. Whether it is a wedding bouquet, flowers on the veil, or floral-embellished suits, each thoughtful decoration adds whimsy, character, and charm to the wedding attire. Carry a pomander ball or garden-style handbag for a glamorous accessory, or dazzle with an eccentric wearable art piece. However you accessorize, enjoy the pleasant aroma of fresh blooms!
